If you have been diagnosed with kidney disease, have symptoms of kidney disease, or have a family history of kidney problems, this clinical research study may be an option for you. Vertex Pharmaceuticals is looking for volunteers to receive an investigational genetic test to see if they were born with a variation in their apolipoprotein L1 (APOL1) gene. APOL1 is a naturally occurring gene that can be found in many tissues of the body, including the blood, saliva, and kidneys. People with CKD not caused by diabetes who have a variation in their APOL1 gene have a higher risk of losing kidney function.

We are currently enrolling people between the ages of 12 and 65 years old who are of African ancestry (which may include but is not limited to the following: Black, Caribbean, African American, sub-Saharan African, or Latinx [defined as a person of Caribbean, South or Central American, or similar descent]) and have a history of increased protein levels in their urine with no evidence of another underlying kidney disease. Those with and without CKD may also be eligible. By answering the following prescreening questions, you agree to provide your information to Praxis, a service provider of the sponsor of this study, Vertex Pharmaceuticals Incorporated (Vertex). The categories of information collected via this questionnaire include: your name and contact information, information about your health and lifestyle, and any other information that you provide. Your information will be used only to determine whether you are eligible for this research study and, if you consent, to inform you of potential Vertex research studies in the future. It will not be shared with Vertex in any way that could identify you. You will also have the option to delete the information after you complete the prescreening process.

If your answers to the questionnaire indicate you may be eligible for the study and you elect to share your contact information, Praxis (we) will share your information with Circuit Clinical, who is also a service provider to Vertex on this study, or another service provider for this study, and a representative will contact you to do a full prescreening. Based on the results of that screening, and with your permission, your information would be shared with a research site. We will not share your personal information with anyone outside of this study other than as required by law, and we will not sell personal information collected from you as part of this study screening. If you are not found to be eligible for this study, you will have the option for Praxis to keep your information on file for a period of time that you elect so you can be contacted if the eligibility criteria changes for the APOL1 CKD Study or future Vertex studies.
